Ensuring appropriate thermal control requires proper design, construction, and use of the occupied space and the HVAC systems conditioning that space. Building management faces a number of challenges: maintaining temperature and humidity, adhering to thermal zoning guidelines, and ensuring proper indoor air quality. This course discusses these challenges and the ways of overcoming them. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: Define: Comfort and health criteria that influence design; Acceptable indoor air quality and ventilation; Jet stream air distribution . List the: Parameters that influence design objectives; Different control methods for heating and cooling systems; Two procedures for determining the ventilation rate and describe each procedure; Factors to observe when selecting outlets with horizontal discharge patterns; Provisions made for return air that enhance occupant comfort; Identify the variables influencing the thermal environment, as well as indoor air contaminants and their sources; Discuss the: Acceptable ranges of operative temperature and relative humidity per Standard 55; Energy savings in relation to summer humidity control; Significance of minimum room air circulation; Describe the: Winter humidity control and its complications; Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT); Zoning recommendations that affect occupant comfort and HVAC success; Capabilities of different ventilation techniques and discuss their alternatives; Factors which help improve air distribution; Explain the different methods of air contaminant reduction.
